A Job You’ll Love

by on December 7, 2011

Since moving to Montreal, I’ve found that I generally wear out a pair of shoes every 3 months. This isn’t because I walk an unnatural amount or buy cheap shoes. It’s because I love my job!

I go to sleep with my laptop on the table beside me. The first thing I do in the morning is check my Twitter feed. I read through about 3-5 newsletters while I go about my morning tasks. I start answering e-mails while I wait for my elevator. By the time I’m stepping into the office I’ve already plowed through the front page of HackerNews and Techmeme. The only thing I consistently forget to do is a check of the weather forecast. Weather is boring. I have no interest in it. Optimism is my risk mitigation strategy.

What does this have to do with my shoes? And, more importantly, what does this have to do with iNovia Capital? Well, first of all, the weather in Montreal is not very forgiving to the unprepared pedestrian without appropriate footwear or protective accessories. Secondly, I usually don’t even notice my feet are soaked until I step through the kitchen and get a stern lecture for leaving a trail of mud in my wake. There are much more interesting things happening in the world, and working at iNovia lets me be on the cusp of them.

It’s not hard to make the case for working in Venture Capital. I have the opportunity to meet with some of best and brightest minds on the planet, often focused on disruptive ideas with a ferocious intensity to succeed. By joining iNovia Capital you’ll work alongside accomplished entrepreneurs, operators and investors who have already achieved significant personal successes and are happy to share their thoughts and advice. You’ll have front seat view of the rapidly growing trends and seismic shifts that are reshaping our economy and society. Obviously I’d be lying if I said it was all sunshine, lollipops and double rainbows; Hours are long, deals are stressful, and things never go according to plan. But the truth of the matter is that the pros of VC life vastly outweigh the cons, and after a while, you’ll spend your mornings worrying less about the weather and more about how much the world has changed while you snoozed.

I don’t know exactly what combination of skills and personality traits are the most valuable to a typical VC firm. I can only tell you what we value at iNovia. We believe in being 100% honest with each other, our partners, and prospective entrepreneurs. We believe that in order to be successful you must work harder and smarter than your competition. We believe you should buy into a vision that goes beyond a paycheque and serves to fuel a passion for entrepreneurism and technology. We believe in being generous with our time, but efficient in decision making; aggressive in our ambitions but conservative with costs; optimistic in our outlook, yet diligent – always diligent.

If you think that this sounds appealing, I would like to turn your attention to our most recent job posting. We are looking to hire an Analyst/Associate to help us manage our existing portfolio and find great new entrepreneurs to invest in. The qualifications are listed in the posting, but rest assured that we are not seeking someone who just checks all the boxes – we want someone who has the capacity to outhustle peers and outperform expectations. Someone with that “X-Factor”. Get ready to learn fast, work hard and stay humble. Most importantly, prepare to wake up every morning excited about ideas, opportunities and entrepreneurs. I hope you don’t mind walking in the rain.
